Aerial view of the Naked Island
Gaining international fame for its surfing spots and unique vibe, Siargao Island forms part of the province of Surigao del Norte in Mindanao.
It has been dubbed as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines. The family of my wife calls it home and ever since that fateful day that changed my life, I also call Siargao home and I truly look forward to my monthly visits to this tropical paradise.
The island is about 437 square kilometers, surrounded by coral reefs, white sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Siargao island has 9 towns or municipalities, but the most prominent are Dapa which is the business/financial center and General Luna which is the main tourist draw.
UNIQUE VIBE
The laid-back atmosphere in Siargao seemingly contrasts with the barrelling waves that put Siargao on the map, drawing surfers and enthusiasts alike. With the advent of more tourists, consequently, the island experienced an economic boom with the annual surfing competitions drawing people from all over the world.
Siargao offers a mix of idyllic island life with access to modern amenities. Much of the tourism is concentrated in General Luna, leaving the rest of the island pretty much reposeful.
It is also home to several natural wonders such as hidden lagoons, and picturesque islets. Popular stops in your island-hopping tours are Naked Island (a bare sandbar), Daku Island and Guyam Island.
Sugba Lagoon in Del Carmen town, framed by lush mangroves and limestone cliffs, is another place you cannot miss.
Sugba Lagoon and the pristine mangroves
The island also hosts the country’s largest mangrove forest in Del Carmen, a haven for biodiversity, including seawater crocodiles.
Best of all, if you're up for it, you can just rent a motorbike and explore the island as you cruise past coconut plantations, rice fields and quiet beaches.
Lately, it has become a haven for digital nomads since you have access to Wi-Fi, international cuisine, accommodations and restaurants that cater to your budget.
But beware of Siargao’s charm because you might fall prey to the dreaded Siargao curse.
Chasing waves, lounging on sandbars, things that you do in a slice of paradise that feels both wild and inviting has a price.

Many tales are told of travelers - after having set foot on the island vowing never to go back to their normal lives again. And indeed, you will find Siargao is now home to several expats who decided to relocate and take the road less traveled, leaving everything behind.
And there are those who keep coming back for more. They swear the waves whisper their names, the swaying palms beckoning to them in their dreams.
So come to Siargao, surf its waves, drink its beauty. But you have been fairly warned.
