You show up at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport armed with a pocket phrasebook, fully prepared to butcher the Filipino language. You have spent fourteen hours or so on a plane, repeating basic Tagalog greetings under your breath, smiling at the thought of Filipinos pleasantly surprised by your heavily accented Tagalog.

You step out onto the pavement, dodging aggressive taxi drivers in Manila, or maybe you’ve made your way down here to the quieter streets of Naga, and you tentatively ask a local for directions using your meticulously rehearsed Tagalog phrases.

The local looks at you, smiles warmly, and replies in completely flawless, rapid-fire English. It’s the greatest relief a traveler can experience. You realize very quickly that English is woven into the country’s very fabric.

It’s on the street signs, the menus, the television broadcasts. You toss the phrasebook into the bottom of your backpack, confident you won’t have any trouble getting around.

But you’re wrong.

While you might understand the spoken words, you may be completely unfamiliar with the everyday language of the Filipinos. To truly communicate here, you have to realize that the most important conversations happen without making a single actual word.

The Sound That Gets Your Attention

The first shock to your system will be the auditory whip-crack of the universal “Psst.” In many Western countries, making a hissing sound is reserved for stray cats, and doing so to a human is considered aggressive street harassment.

It’s rude. It’s dismissive. But here, the sharp, sibilant “psst” is a surgical strike. It is the foundational cornerstone of getting someone’s attention.

It cuts straight through the overwhelming white noise of the street—the roaring diesel engines, the barking dogs, the thumping bass from a passing tricycle.

Abroad, we often joke that if you want to know whether Filipinos are walking among pedestrians on foreign streets, do the “pssst,” and all the Filipinos will turn their heads around.

It isn’t rude. It’s just efficient. It’s the great equalizer. You use it to flag down a jeepney, to get your friend’s attention across a noisy street, or to stop a guy pushing a cart of taho.

Once you get over the initial awkwardness and actually try it yourself, you realize the sheer, undeniable power of the hiss.

Directions Without Words

Then comes the complete dismantling of your understanding of pointing. If you ask that same local for directions to the nearest 7-Eleven, pay close attention to their hands.

They won’t move. Pointing your index finger at someone or something is often viewed as overly aggressive or accusatory. Instead, you have to watch their face. They will look at you, look down the street, and aggressively thrust their lips forward.

This is the nguso, the lip-point. It is an exact, localized GPS entirely operated by the lower half of the face. And it comes with degrees of severity. A gentle, quick pout means your destination is right around the corner.

A complete, strained neck extension, with the lips pushed out as far as physically possible, means you have a long, exhausting, sweaty walk ahead of you. It takes a few days to stop looking at people’s hands and start looking at their mouths when you ask for directions. But once you decode it, you’ll catch yourself lip-pointing at the soy sauce across the dinner table.

The Silent Language

But the absolute heavy lifter of Filipino non-verbal communication is the eyebrow. The Filipino eyebrow is a multi-tool. It’s a Swiss Army Knife of social interaction that replaces entire paragraphs of dialogue.

In the West, raising your eyebrows usually means you’re shocked or skeptical. Here, a quick, upward flick of the eyebrows simply means “Yes.” If you ask a vendor if the mangoes are sweet, they might not say a word; they’ll just give you a firm, confident eyebrow raise.

It goes deeper than that, though. The eyebrow raise is the ultimate, silent acknowledgment of existence. If you walk past a security guard at a mall, you don’t need to offer a booming “Good morning!” You catch his eye and give a subtle flick of the brows. He will do it back. It means, “I see you, you see me, we are good.”

If you are trapped in a boring conversation at a party and you catch your friend’s eye across the room, a slow, deliberate raise of the eyebrows translates entirely to, “Get me out of here right now.” It is a silent brotherhood, a shared frequency locals use to check in with one another constantly.

Moving Through Space, Quietly

Even moving your physical body through a space has its own unspoken vocabulary. You are constantly going to be in someone’s way here, or they are going to be in yours. When you need to walk between two people having a conversation on a sidewalk, you don’t push through aggressively, and you don’t say “Excuse me.”

Instead, you do the dip. You drop your head down slightly, extend one arm out in front of you, and point your fingers straight down to the ground as you shuffle quickly through the gap. It is a beautiful, deeply ingrained physical apology.

You are visually lowering your profile, communicating absolute respect for the space they are occupying. You are physically saying, “I am making myself small; forgive my intrusion.” The conversation won’t even pause. They will naturally part like the Red Sea, acknowledging your polite, silent request.

Even settling your restaurant bill operates on this silent frequency. You don’t yell across the dining room. You catch the waiter’s eye, raise your hands, and draw a quick and small rectangle in the air with your index fingers, the universal symbol for the receipt.

You can spend months memorizing the dictionary. You can perfect your pronunciation of ‘ng’. But you aren’t truly fluent until you learn how to shut up and speak the language of the streets without a single word.

Try catching a ride with just a hiss, pointing the direction with just your mouth, and asking for the bill with just a small rectangle formed by your hands raised. Oddly enough, you have just learned the quiet language of the Filipinos.

When one immerses into the culture of the Philippines, the experience is beyond sensory - certainly more than the blinding white sand of Boracay, the kinetic energy of Manila’s traffic, the never-ending generosity of a fiesta spread, and the warm hospitality of a bilingual people.

Underneath the smiles and the world famous beauty and talent of the Filipino lie a complex, unspoken emotional landscape. The actual Filipino experience is not found just in the sights, but in navigating the subtle undercurrents of social interaction.

Our Filipino culture is highly contextual, deeply relational. It prioritizes social harmony above almost everything else. To the untrained eye, some of our behaviors can appear baffling, even contradictory, or, at times, frustrating.

So, I’ll let you in on three core cultural concepts that may help you navigate the Filipino culture and build really tight friendships with Filipinos.

These are the Tampo, the Puwede Na, and the Bahala Na. Understanding these is like decoding the ring to the Filipino soul. In many ways, these are really coping mechanisms more than just linguistic quirks. They are a love language and strategies for survival that are finely crafted over centuries.

The Tampo

The “Tampo” is like the thunder of silence. Imagine you are chatting with your cheerful Filipino friend. Suddenly, the air cools. Your friend’s answers become monosyllabic. They refuse to meet your eye. What happened? Suddenly, heavy, pointed silence descends.

My friend, you have just experienced the Tampo.

This is often unsatisfactorily translated as “sulking” or “pouting,” but Tampo is further nuanced. It is a uniquely Filipino way of expressing hurt feelings in a culture where direct confrontation is considered aggressive and damaging to hiya (face or social dignity).

When a Filipino has tampo against a friend, there is a quiet withdrawal of affection. There is a phase called “silent treatment,” an unspoken demand that the offending party exercise “pakikiramdam,” a combination of heightened sensitivity and emotional intuition.

I know. I know. It sounds unfair, especially when one clearly does not know what they have done to deserve such thunderous silence. But listen: the person bearing the tampo does not want to tell you what you did wrong; they want you to feel that something is wrong and care enough to figure it out.

In a way, it is a relational test. Tampo asks the clueless offender: “If you truly value me, you will notice my silence and do something to bridge the gap.” For a non-Filipino, this can be terrifying.

Did you insult the food? Did you forget a courtesy? Was it something that I said, or something I did? And it does not really matter in the beginning. It matters much in the end if you know.

Remember, if you want to unlock the tampo, use the lambing. I cannot seem to find an English word that fully translates this word. But it is a combination of sweet gestures, playful teasing with words, and even songs, to woo the person bearing the tampo. A heartfelt apology, a peace offering - food, flowers, a hand-written note - can quickly thaw the ice. Tampo is rarely permanent; it is a temporary emotional tollbooth waiting for the currency of tenderness.

Puwede Na

“Puwede na” is a double-edged sword. If you spend enough time in the archipelago, you will hear the phrase “Puwede na ‘yan” (That will do/That’s good enough) uttered frequently. This phrase perfectly embodies the practicality and ingenuity of the Filipino people. However, the concept of “Puwede na” has two essential dimensions that one should not miss when in the Philippines.

On the one hand, “Puwede na” is a testament to the Filipino’s incredible resilience and diskarte (resourcefulness/street smarts). In a developing nation like ours, which is frequently battered by typhoons, earthquakes, and economic hardships, waiting for perfection is a luxury.

Where a few hours could spell the difference between a family eating or not, “Puwede na” is the MacGyver-like ability to fix a sputtering jeepney engine with baling wire and a prayer not to lose the opportunity to earn a living for the day.

“Puwede na” is shrugging off the hardship of bailing floodwater out of the living room after a storm and making do, “puwede na ‘to, kesa wala” (this is better than nothing). It is the practical solution to any problem, highlighting the Filipino’s ingenuity and resilience.

On the other hand, “Puwede na” has a dark side. To some people - not only to tourists and visitors - it can also sometimes be frustrating. I’ve seen expatriates working in multinational companies shake their heads, seeing this concept as an acceptance of mediocrity.

“Puede na” rears its ugly head when an employee stops at “functional” instead of pursuing “excellence.” At times, “puede na” means unfinished infrastructure, confusing processes, stubborn bureaucracies, or services as long as the minimum requirements are complied with.

When “Puwede na” becomes a default setting rather than a survival tactic, it can border on settling, hindering long-term progress and meticulous planning.

So, to anyone trying to understand the “Puwede na” concept, you have to see both sides of this double-edged sword and celebrate the ingenuity that keeps the country running against the odds and recognize the occasional exasperation that comes when “good enough” is not quite good enough.

Bahala Na

“Bahala na” works like a leap of faith wrapped in grit. I would venture to say that perhaps the most famous, and most misunderstood, Filipino phrase is “Bahala na.”

The phrase is frequently equated to the Spanish “Que sera, sera,” which translates to “Whatever will be, will be.” This is a kind of passive fatalism depicted by hands thrown up in either exasperation or hope, leaving destiny to take its course.

However, this interpretation misses the mark entirely. Linguists believe the term is rooted in the pre-colonial phrase “Bathala na” (Let God handle it/Leave it to God). “Bahala na” is far from passive; it is courage that is active. It is the psychological fuel needed to face uncertainty in a volatile world.

It is the attitude adopted after one has done everything humanly possible. It is common to picture a Filipino employee who quits his job, pours his entire life savings into a small business, works day and night, and on opening day takes a deep breath and says, “Bahala na.”

This is not passive. This is a leap of faith wrapped in grit. It acknowledges that some things are beyond man’s control, but he works on those within his control, believing that “Bathala,” or God, will take care of those beyond him.

“Bahala na” allows Filipinos to work through adversity with a smile. After a storm, it will enable Filipinos to retreat, regroup, and then rebuild. And it is what allows our Filipino Migrant Workers to pack their bags and venture overseas to find work.

It is the audacious hope that if you do your part, God, the Divine, or the universe, will do the rest.

These concepts, along with the other cultural concepts of “hiya”, “utang na loob,” and “pakikisama” (which deserve their own separate discussion), offer a way to unlocking the Filipino social heart and soul.

A foreigner need not understand the specific nuances of these cultural concepts. Simply recognizing them when encountered can make it easier to navigate social interactions and build a deeper connection with the Filipino way of life.

You usually hear it before you see it. The deep, rattling rumble of a diesel engine, a sudden, vibrating blast of a bass-heavy, maybe a ’90s power ballad or some local hip-hop—and a sharp, impatient honk cutting right through the thick afternoon heat.

I’ve taken so many jeepney rides in my life that I’ve come to take the whole experience inside this rolling piece of Filipino ingenuity for granted.

But today, as I outlined my article, the entire cabin is flashing before my eyes. I can practically smell the diesel and feel the vinyl seat sticking to my legs, like I just hopped off the rear bumper five minutes ago.

Getting On the Jeepney

If you’re a tourist standing on a sidewalk in the Philippines, walking with pedestrians along a street lined with food vendors, the jeepney looks like pure, unadulterated chaos roaring toward you.

They are impossibly long, painted in screaming loud colors, dripping with silver tassels, and often packed to the very brim with passengers clinging to the back railings.

But the real story isn’t the flamboyant exterior. It’s what happens when the massive vehicle slows down just enough for you to hop on. You step up onto the metal rear bumper, duck your head, and slide onto the vinyl bench inside.

Instantly, the street noise almost fades into oblivion. Inside this jeepney is an entirely different world. There is a peaceful quiet that descends on the people inside. Perhaps it is out of gratitude for getting a ride, or for a few minutes to hours of being able to sit.

And there it is—people stare out the open, glassless windows, holding onto their bags, catching a breeze. And suddenly, you’re no longer just a bewildered tourist trying to survive the traffic; you’ve just entered a localized, moving ecosystem.

You are about to witness our brand of everyday civic trust.

Unspoken Rules of the Ride

The first thing you learn is that a jeepney is never truly full. There is always room for one more. When a new passenger climbs in, nobody rolls their eyes or groans. Instead, an unspoken, synchronized shuffle happens. It’s called usog.

Everybody scoots down an inch until a tiny sliver of space opens up. You sit knee-to-knee and shoulder-to-shoulder with total strangers. Personal space doesn’t exist here, but nobody complains. You just make room.

Then comes the main event of this culture ride: paying the fare. If you’re sitting right behind the driver, it’s easy. But if you’re squeezed in at the very back near the exit, the driver is miles away. So, you do what everyone else does. You hold out your coins, gently tap the shoulder of the person sitting next to you, and say, “Bayad po” (Here is my payment).

What happens next is genuinely amazing to anyone who didn’t grow up here. That stranger takes your money without a word. They don’t even really look at you. They just take it and hand it to the person next to them.

Hand to hand to hand, a completely organic bucket brigade of passengers passes your cash down the line. It travels past school kids, grandmothers holding market bags, and office workers in crisp button-downs, until it finally reaches the driver’s outstretched hand.

You don’t ask for a receipt. You don’t watch your coins like a hawk. You look out the window. And a few minutes later, the exact same thing happens in reverse. A tap on your shoulder, and a handful of coins—your sukli, or change—is dropped into your palm.

It passed through five different hands, and nobody kept a single cent. It happens thousands of times a day across the country, running on nothing but mutual trust.

The Quiet Genius of Everyday Systems

Meanwhile, the driver is pulling off a minor miracle.

He’s navigating heavy, unpredictable traffic on a manual transmission.

He’s listening to destinations shouted from the back, calculating fares based on distance in his head, remembering who handed him a fifty-peso bill versus a twenty, and digging into his wooden coin organizer to make exact change—all while steering with one hand and watching the sidewalk for new passengers to hail him down.

He doesn’t write anything down. He doesn’t use an app. He just knows.

Getting off is just as beautifully low-tech as it gets. There are no glowing electronic stop buttons. You say “Para po” (Stop, please). Or, if the diesel engine is too loud, you take a coin and clink it against the metal handrail on the roof, or you can tap the roof with your knuckle.

That sharp, metallic or thumping sound cuts right through the noise of the engine and the traffic. The driver hears it instantly and expertly pulls over to the curb.

As you stand up, hunched over beneath the low ceiling, the sea of passengers parts again. People automatically tuck their knees in tightly to let you squeeze past. They would even casually grab your heavy bag and pass it along to the passengers to help you lower it safely to the pavement.

As you step off the jeepney, you may be treated to a cloud of exhaust…that’s part of the experience. You’re back in the busy streets.

For a few pesos (it’s Php13-15), you didn’t just buy a ride. You experienced front-row and center, the culture of everyday cooperation that keeps the Philippines alive and moving.

The contributions of artists, whether through paintings, sculpture, dance, and music can help shape a national identity and be part of a nation’s collective memory, one where a member of said nation can look at an artist’s work and associate it with the overall cultural landscape.

Countries give prestigious awards to exceptional artists, and the Philippines is among those. The Order of National Artists of the Philippines is awarded to Filipino nationals who have made significant contributions to the development of Filipino art.

These artists receive widespread recognition, their work is displayed in national galleries and is constantly referenced and used as a form of nation building and national identity, whether it’s through Aralin Panlipuran, Buwan ng Wika, or through various acts of patriotism.

Succeeding artists go on to procure inspiration from their works, continuing not only the artists’ legacy but transmitting their work to future generations. As of 2025, there are over 80 recognized National Artists who represent contributions in the categories of Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Arts, Architecture, and Allied Arts.

Artists continue to be granted this prestigious honor, contributing to the visual, music, and collective identity of a sovereign nation looking to carve its own image on its own terms.

A Few Notable Examples

There are many great examples of National Artists. The earliest awardees of this title continue to inspire future generations of Filipinos, their influence leaving an imprint into the collective national psyche.

Fernando Amorsolo is one such example.

His paintings capture idyllic rural scenes featuring rice fields, women in early 20th century Filipiniana, tinikling in a plaza in the shadows of a Spanish-era church, and other traditional landscapes.

His work is seen as a form of defiance against American influence, as he painted scenes that obscured the influence America had at the time as the Philippines was an American colony.

In these paintings, Amorsolo sought to bring out the beauty of Filipino culture in a more untainted way, and through his works expressed Filipino nationalism.

Nicknamed the “Painter of Philippine Sunlight”, Amorsolo used bright colors with Impressionist influence as a way to instill the idea that this image of rural Filipino culture is poetic and worthy.

In his paintings, the issues of his time didn’t touch the serenity that was the Filipino way of life. His wartime paintings showed contrast, where pastoral scenes were replaced by somber subjects and dark lighting.

Muralist Carlos “Botong” Francisco from Angono, Rizal painted murals evoking a sense of modern nationalism as the Philippines had in his time recently acquired its sovereignty.

Some of his famous works include the First Mass at Limasawa, The Progress of Medicine in the Philippines, The Martyrdom of Rizal, and the Muslim Betrothal. He was also responsible for discovering the Angono Petroglyphs. His murals are on display in the National Museum of the Philippines.

In his murals, he tells the story of a nation, its indigenous roots, its colonial history, and in the time of these paintings, a burgeoning nation trying to find its identity as a newly free and sovereign power.

Francisca Reyes-Aquino diligently recorded and taught local ethnic folk songs and dances during her academic career. Some dances she taught in her classes from her research included Tinikling, Maglalatik, Lubi-lubi, and Polka sa Nayon.

As a supervisor of physical education for the Board of Education, Reyes-Aquino used her position to facilitate the teaching of ethnic folk dances, helping push folk dances that were once confined to rural barangays into the national spotlight.

Due to her work, many popular Filipino folk dances have become a fixture in the national psyche, and are part of traditional celebrations around the country, in fiestas and in holidays.

Antonio Buenaventura composed many songs with the influence of ethnic folk songs he researched, while he accompanied Reyes-Aquino to record the many folk dances and songs of the many ethnic groups around the country.

He composed the accompaniment for the folk dance Pandanggo sa Ilaw. Through combining ethnic sounds and Western compositions, Buenaventura was able to create the Filipino sound.

Through his work, the Philippines gained a national sound and a musical identity. Alongside Reyes-Aquino, Filipino folk music and dance became a part of the national landscape.

It begins with the sun creeping over the silhouette of a volcano—be it Mayon, Bulusan, or Isarog—and, on some days, if you listen closely, the rhythmic, metallic clack-clack-clack of a bolo knife striking stone. That is the sound of pagtilad, the distinct, skillful art of cracking the Pili nut.

I grew up seeing the Pili tree (Canarium Ovatum) among other trees in backyards. The Pili tree stood like a proud guard, its massive, buttressed roots were part of our playground, and its canopy provided respite from the sun.

Beyond our personal experience with the Pili tree, we are proud of its produce, the “Queen of Nuts,” a delicacy that has defined our culinary heritage, sustained our economy, and charmed the palate of the world.

The Art of Cracking the Nuts

To understand the Bicolano, you must understand the Pili, and that understanding begins with the sheer difficulty of reaching the prize inside. The pili nut is not just a snack in a jar. It is the product of both patience and precision. The Pili shell is notoriously tougher than a walnut, more stubborn than a pecan.

Your run-of-the-mill nutcracker cannot crack it; it would break first before the shell could be broken. This is where the skill of the paratilad or the sheller is most needed. I remember watching my father sit on a low wooden stool, a sack of black, dried nuts beside him.

He would place a nut on a flat stone and, with a terrifyingly sharp bolo, strike it with exact force… if the blow was too soft, the shell remained shut; if the blow was too hard, the creamy nut inside was crushed.

If one wants to make high-grade sweet pili nuts, the creamy kernel inside the shell must be extracted whole. So, it is akin to a dance of danger and delicateness, a skill passed down through generations.

From Backyard Tree to Kitchen Table

That kernel, once freed, is a revelation. It is high in healthy fats, boasting a texture that is uniquely creamy, almost buttery when raw, and impeccably crisp when roasted.

What sets the Pili apart from its similar substitutes, like the almond or the macadamia, is its distinct texture and its rich, earthy, silky-butter taste, like the robust, volcanic soil it grows in.

While the world knows the Pili nut primarily as a glaze-covered confection, growing up in Bicol meant knowing it at every stage. As children, we did not just eat the kernel; we also enjoyed the pulp. You see, before the nut reveals its hard shell, it is covered in a thick, purple, black skin and a fibrous pulp. This must be boiled at just the right temperature, or it goes to waste.

My grandmother used to put her hand in the pot while it boiled, just until she could no longer take the heat. And when you get it right, the pulp becomes a savory snack with a texture similar to that of sweet potato or avocado. You season it with a dash of fish sauce (patis), dip it in chili-mansi, or roll it in plain sugar. We usually savored it for our afternoon merienda, staining our fingers purple!

But, of course, the sweets are the stars that draw the crowds. Walls of jars filled with pili nut greet every tourist walking into pasalubong centers across the Bicol Region. There is the classic Pili tart, a boat of crumbly pastry carrying the caramelized nut, or the Mazapan de Pili, a soft, milk-infused bar that melts on the tongue.

There is also the sugar-coated variant, the salty-garlic roast, and the modern chili-honey infusion that pays homage to our region’s love for spice. Over time, the Pili has even found its way into our savory dishes.

In modern Bicolano fusion cuisine, you will find crushed Pili to thicken and give texture to sauces, Pili-crusted tilapia, and pesto made not with pine nuts, but with our beloved local treasure. It is a testament to the nut’s versatility. It is as comfortable in a five-star restaurant as it is in a sari-sari store.

Global Demand

This culinary versatility has propelled the Pili into becoming our “Black Gold,” one of the few crops almost exclusive to the Philippines, with Bicol being the undisputed center of production. For decades, it was a backyard industry where families would harvest what they could, process it in their kitchens, and sell it at the local market. Today, the industry has transformed.

Now we see demand for Pili nuts across the oceans, as health enthusiasts in Europe and North America have discovered their high Vitamin E and magnesium content, labeling them a “superfood.” This global attention has helped invigorate our local economy.

The Spirit of Oragon

For Bicolano farmers, the Pili tree is an insurance policy. Unlike coconut trees that can snap like matchsticks during our frequent typhoons, the Pili tree is resilient. It is known as a “storm survivor.” When the fierce winds of the Pacific batter our region, the Pili tree may lose its leaves, but it rarely falls. It stands on its ground, sheds its foliage to reduce wind drag, and waits for the sun to return.

This resilience helps restore economic stability for the region. When rice crops fail or coconut prices drop, the Pili remains. The export market has raised the value of the nut, helping farmers send their children to school and upgrade their homes. It is a crop that gives back to the people who care for it, embodying the very spirit of the Bicolano people: Oragon.

This Bicolano word is hard to translate directly and will need its own article to be understood but for now, it means strong, feisty, impressive, and enduring. Like the Pili shell, we are tough on the outside, hardened by the storms that frequently visit our shores. We are difficult to crack. But once you get past that tough exterior, you find a richness and warmth that is unparalleled.

For the tourist, buying a jar of Pili nuts is the ultimate pasalubong, a proof of travel to bring back to their hometowns. But I like to think that when visitors buy Pili, they are not just purchasing a snack; they are taking with them a testimony of our spirit.

When you visit Bicol, you will see Pili nuts everywhere. You will see them in the grand malls, bus terminals, or in plastic packets sold by vendors who hop on the bus before it departs. You will see them drying on mats by the roadside in rural barangays. They are a constant reminder of who we are. We are people of the volcano and the typhoon, but also people of the rich earth and the sweet harvest.

Next time you open a bag of Pili nuts, take a moment. Hold the teardrop-shaped kernel and imagine the bolo striking the stone. Hear the wind rustling through the canopy of a century-old tree in Albay or Camarines Sur. Taste the creaminess that no other nut can offer. You are not just eating superfood; you are tasting the resilience, the culture, and the heart of the Bicolano people.

Nothing is arguably a bigger cultural marker of a nation than its language. It is the biggest indicator of a nation’s culture, as alongside values and ethos, it is the best example of a living and breathing society.

The Tagalog language, original to the Katagalugan, or “Land of the Tagalogs”, has a territorial domain encompassing much of southern Luzon and a few islands directly south, including Mindoro and Marinduque. Today there are 33 million L1 (First Language) speakers and an additional 54 million L2 (Second Language) speakers, all scattered throughout the archipelago and in the diaspora.

Tagalog is basically the basis of the national language, known as Wikang Filipino, used in national media, taught in education, and is the lingua franca of the nation. Some may argue that Wikang Filipino and Tagalog are separate languages, but in practice, the two are largely the same and are often interchangeable, given that a vast majority of the lexicon in Wikang Filipino comes from Tagalog, with only a small number of words coming from other local languages.

Origins

Tagalog is part of the Central Philippine language branch within the wider Austronesian language family, a language family that includes Bahasa Malaysia, Ilocano, Waray, Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Tetum, Samoan, and Yami.

The name of the language and the people indicate a population that lived on the rivers, and a language spoken on said rivers. Tagalog, or “taga-ilog”, meaning “from the river”, denotes the importance of river systems for the original people, with Pasig River being one of the most significant rivers in ancient Tagalog culture.

This was where the kingdoms of Tondo and Maynila were born from, with Tagalog kingdoms Tondo and Pulilan mentioned in the Golden Copperplace Inscription dating back to 900CE. It was during this era that Tagalog was written in the Baybayin script, an abugida that, like most Southeast Asian written languages, ultimately traces its origins to Brahmic scripts.

Baybayin was primarily used to write poetry and everyday expressions rather than formal legal documents, which is why most of the written Baybayin has been lost to time and the elements with a few notable pieces preserved in some of our national museums.

The Doctrina Cristiana and Spanish Era Documents

A 1593 document in the early Spanish period is among the first examples of written Tagalog and shows that Baybayin was adopted by early Spanish colonizers, albeit in an attempt to attract converts.

It was in the early Spanish period that Tagalog dictionaries were first written, with the “Arte y Reglas de la Lengua Tagala” written by Dominican friar Francisco Blancas de San Jose in 1610 documenting the language, and the 1613 Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala by Franciscan priest Pedro de San Buenaventura in Laguna.

More missionaries compiled and edited Tagalog dictionaries over the years, one of them being a Czech Jesuit missionary Pablo Clain in the 18th century, who used Tagalog in much of his writings.

A Creation of a National Language

The Philippines was at an interesting point in its history in 1937. Two years prior, the country was given a new constitution which basically put the country under a transitional government that promised in 10 years the country would become fully independent.

This meant full sovereignty over their lands, which also included what would be the national language in which everyone was going to speak to each other in. There were a couple of ways they could go about this. They could just stick to English and Spanish and call it a day.

They could also follow Indonesia’s lead at the time and prop up the Riau dialect of Malay, a historical trade language, to national language status and re-brand it Bahasa Indonesia, given that trade Malay was historically used in pre-colonial societies all over the Malay Archipelago, with some rajahs and datus being reasonably versed in the language.

Instead, a couple of delegates from across the archipelago decided to gather in Manila and “create” a national language, one based on the many languages that were spoken among the thousands of islands. There needed to be one main language that was the basis of what was to be the “Wikang Filipino”.

After a series of deliberations and multiple studies and surveys of each existing native language, the Institute of National Language designated Tagalog as the language to be the basis of the Filipino language. President Manuel Quezon issued an Executive Order approving the adoption of Tagalog as the national language of the Philippines.

Reasonings behind the decision to propagate Tagalog as the national language included its wide geographical range, it not being divided into smaller daughter languages like Visayan or Bikol, its extensive and well-developed literary tradition, and its location where it is spoken.

Manila is where Tagalog comes from and being the political and economic center of the country, to them it made sense that Tagalog should be the unifying language. It also helped that the Katipunan used Tagalog for its operations during the struggles for independence. The Philippine National Assembly passed the Commonwealth Act declaring that the Filipino national language would be considered an official language when the country was given full sovereignty.

The Filipino Language Since Then

Wikang Pilipino today is a lingua franca, and while there have been periods of pushbacks from other ethnic groups, it still reigns as one of the unifying languages that binds the collection of islands together.

The 1987 constitution once again designated Filipino alongside English as the official languages. The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino was created to help develop, propagate, and preserve the national language as well as other regional languages.

Buwan ng Wika is held during August as a way to celebrate Filipino language and culture. Throughout the whole month, local cultures and languages are promoted, encouraging their usage and promoting patriotism. Nationwide, schools host events to instill cultural values. The month-long event also encourages wearing traditional clothing and traditional songs and dance events.

Today, Tagalog or Wikang Pilipino remains more than just a tool for communication. It is a bridge across islands, generations, and identities. While the Philippines is home to hundreds of languages, the Filipino language serves as a shared voice that allows a diverse nation to speak to itself and to the world.

In understanding Tagalog’s journey, from river settlements and Baybayin scripts to constitutional recognition, we come to understand not only the roots of our national language, but the evolving story of the Filipino people themselves.

I have lived in the shadow of Mount Isarog for many years. It feels like a constant dialogue with a giant who never speaks but is always listening. In Naga, we are used to looking up at that jagged, emerald crown every morning, sometimes checking it like a weathervane to see if the day will be kind or if the clouds are “nagluluto” or cooking up a storm.

It is a constant in our lives, yet it is heartbreaking how many of us have come to treat it like mere wallpaper in our daily grind. For Nagueños who drank the mountain’s waters, it feels like we are losing a piece of our collective soul every time someone looks at those slopes and sees nothing but timber or a place for a quick selfie.

Mt. Isarog is not just a volcano to us. It is the silent ancestor that has watched over the peninsula long before the Spaniards came to our shores. It has listened to the stories of a people not written in history books.

The Forest

If you talk to the Agta-Tabangnon, the true children of the mountain, they will tell you that the forest is not empty. Over steaming bowls of kinalas in Panicuason, we reminisce about old stories of the mountain and the powerful spirits that reside there. I grew up hearing about the “mga nag-agui,” the guardians who moved through the mossy thickets whose footprints were never seen.

In the many times that I climbed up Mt. Isarog, our elder Bicolano guide never forgot to pause at the edge of the tree line to offer a whispered “tabi-tabi po.” These words form a sacred contract. We say “tabi-tabi po“ to ask permission to enter a place that is not ours, respecting the space of the spirits who stand guard.

We are reminded to enter quietly and humbly because the mountain can sense an arrogant heart. Step onto its slopes with pride and the trails are said to twist and trekkers lose their way through a thick mist that descends until the heart is finally humbled. It is the mountain’s gentle reminder of its power, and of the truth that we are no match against the earth’s ancient energy.

The Agta still talks of deities who once walked the jagged slopes, of spirits who governed the flow of the springs. We believe the mountain is a living, breathing creature. And when we hike up toward the “Patag“ or the “Panicuason“ trails, we begin to believe it, too. As the air thins and the temperature drops, we enter the magnificent realm we regard as the “biological island.”

Because Mt. Isarog stands alone, separated from other mountains by vast plains, life here has evolved in its own secret way. We have shrew-mice and striped rats that exist nowhere else on the planet, tiny residents of the mountain’s high-altitude fortress. There is also the Rafflesia, that strange, giant flower that blooms in the shadows, smelling of the deep, dark earth.

To a scientist, this is called high endemism. To a Bicolano, this is the mountain’s wealth, the treasure that our guardians are keeping safe from the greed of the world below.

A Mountain that Needs Protection

There is a sacredness in the water that flows from Mt. Isarog that no bottle from a grocery store can ever match. We call it the lifeblood of Bicol. The water travels through eons of volcanic rock, emerging in hidden springs and cold waterfalls such as Malabsay and Nabuntulan. It feeds the Naga River and the Bicol River; it is the water that nourishes the rice on our plates and the siling labuyo that fires up our Bicolano blood. To us, the mountain is a mother who never stops giving.

Today, however, as the urban lights of Naga and Pili creep higher up its base, and the chainsaws of illegal loggers bite into the “lungs” of our region, we are witnessing the quiet tragedy of our Mt. Isarog’s flailing health - its forests thinning, its springs quietly and tragically drying up. The “sweet water” we once bragged about risks becoming just a story we tell people.

Modern hikers speak of “conquering” Mt. Isarog. But we, of the old, know better. We do not conquer this mountain. We survive it. If we are lucky, the mountain changes us. The climb is a grueling ritual of mud and steep ridges, where every step is a negotiation with the roots and the leeches (limatik). And when we finally stand at the summit and look down at the Bicol River winding like a snake toward the sea, we feel a deep sense of “pag-iriba” or belonging.

We realize then that it is not just a view we are looking at, but a perspective of the mountain’s protector. Mt. Isarog is ancient. It is slow. It is holy. It cannot be conquered.

New Guardians

I feel a love and respect for this mountain that I can no longer climb. We owe it to life-giving Mt. Isarog to remember the stories of the Agta, the rituals and silent prayers of those who walk its trails, and the lives of the shrew-rats in its rich bowels. We must remember that Mt. Isarog is the reason we still enjoy the cool breeze that rolls down into the city on rainy evenings. Forgetting the mountain means losing the anchor that holds us to this land.

As Bicolanos, we are defined by many things - among them, this gentle giant of a mountain. While Mt. Mayon gets the tourists and the postcards, Mt. Isarog holds our secrets and our survival.

It is time we stop treating Mt. Isarog as a backdrop and start honoring it as the sanctuary it truly is. We must be the new guardians, the ones who ensure that the “mga nag-agui“ still have a forest to wander in and that the children of Naga will continue to have a sacred mountain to look up to.

Because people who forget their mountain are people who have lost their way home, and Mt. Isarog is the only home we have that can touch the sky. Let us not be the generation that allowed the sacred mountain to fade into a mere memory, but the one that remembered how to listen to its silence and protect its heart.

In the Philippines, the most valuable things are rarely rushed.

Good food takes time. Meaningful conversations drift. Relationships are nurtured. And in that same quiet, deliberate way, so are South Sea pearls.

A recent December trip with friends to Puerto Princesa gave me the chance to rediscover the beauty and allure of South Sea pearls – a true Palawan treasure. Browsing multiple small shops, listening to stories behind the pieces, and lingering longer than planned became a quiet highlight of the trip.

The Philippine South Sea pearls are widely considered the largest and most luxurious pearls in the world. That part is true. What’s less often discussed is why pearls grown in Philippine waters, are sought after by jewelers and collectors alike.

It’s no coincidence that the South Sea Pearl was declared as the Philippine National Gem in 1996, a fitting tribute to the country’s title “Pearl of the Orient Seas”. The oyster and pearl are also depicted on the reverse side of the country’s 1,000-peso bills.

Born in Palawan’s Waters

Most pearl farming in the Philippines happens around Palawan, an island known for its clear, nutrient-rich waters and carefully protected marine ecosystems. The Palawan waters are clean enough to support healthy oysters, yet rich enough to allow pearls to develop slowly and naturally. These provide ideal conditions for cultivating South Sea pearls.

Palawan is a region that puts premium on careful development, where speed might not always mean efficient. That philosophy extends to pearl farming, where growth is allowed to happen at its own deliberate pace.

Among South Sea pearls, one variety stands apart: the golden pearl.

These rare pearls come from the gold-lipped Pinctada maxima oyster, a species found only in select parts of the world, and most famously in Palawan. It is the only oyster capable of producing true golden South Sea pearls - prized for their warm, luminous tones that range from soft champagne to deep, sunlit gold.

This isn’t a color applied or enhanced after the fact. It’s something the pearl becomes on its own, shaped by the oyster and the sea over several patient years.

Today, the world’s leading producer of golden South Sea pearls is Jewelmer, a Philippine company that operates pearl farms throughout the Palawan archipelago.

Slow, Big, But Not Loud

A Philippine South Sea pearl often takes several years before it’s ready - typically two to five years. Farmers don’t rush the oysters, and they don’t force growth to meet demand.

The result is a pearl with, to quote Google, “thick nacre and real depth”, the kind that doesn’t just shine under direct light but carries a soft glow even in the shadow.

They say you can usually tell when a pearl has been hurried: it looks flat, may appear too perfect, almost mimicking plastic.

The Philippine South Sea pearls are known to look different: slightly irregular, warmer, alive.

They also age beautifully, which is why they’re often treated as heirlooms rather than seasonal accessories.

South Sea pearls are large, and some are impressively so. But what sets Philippine pearls apart is that they don’t feel oversized for attention’s sake.

It’s often said that a large pearl without luster is simply big while a large pearl with depth feels right. Philippine South Sea pearls usually fall into the second category.

Collectors value Philippine South Sea pearls for their natural palette - soft whites, silvers, gentle champagnes, and golds that don’t look painted on.

Their color comes from warm waters, healthy oysters, and time. What you see is what the pearl became on its own.

In a world where luxury is often engineered to look expensive, that kind of raw honesty stands out.

Small Scale by Choice

Outside of a few major producers, pearl farming in the Philippines is still largely family-run and small-scale. Many growers have worked the same waters for generations. The goal isn’t volume but quality.

That means fewer pearls make it to the market. It also means standards stay high.

Jewelers and collectors alike know this which is why Philippine South Sea pearls are often spoken about quietly, almost reverently, rather than aggressively marketed.

Palawan’s relationship with pearls goes back long before modern farming.

This island is home to some of the largest natural pearls ever discovered, including the 75-pound Pearl of Puerto Princesa and the 14-pound Pearl of Lao Tzu (also known as the Pearl of Allah).

These aren’t cultivated gems, and their discovery reinforces Palawan’s long-standing place in pearl history and its deep connection to the sea.

So, are Philippine South Sea pearls among the most coveted gems in the world?

Among those who understand pearls, yes. They are firmly among the top tier. Some may even claim that they sit at the top, with the rare golden variety referred to as the “queen of cultured pearls”.

It’s because they represent something increasingly rare: patience, restraint, and craftsmanship that respects the process.

They aren’t designed to impress quickly. They’re designed to last.

And like many of the best things that come out of the Philippines, their value isn’t always obvious at first glance. But once you understand them, you start seeing them differently.

There’s something profound about reunions, especially when it involves old dear friends around Christmas time.

These are the people who saw us at our most vulnerable and most impuissant. They celebrated our wildest triumphs and stuck with us through our deepest doubts.

BIG DAY

It’s been eons since graduation. Life has pulled everyone in different directions. A few have migrated abroad. Some have chased careers and built families along the way. Another friend travels around the world collecting stories like souvenirs. Texts and group chats keep the spark alive—quick “happy birthdays,” the sharing of milestones, the occasional late-night vent…

But nothing compares to being in the same room again.

So, there we were in that beautiful resort in Puerto Princesa, curiously named “The Funny Lion”.

But prior to that, most of us had to move heaven and earth to make it happen. Flights are booked, drives are planned, excuses are made to bosses and in-laws.

And then there’s just the anticipation and the waiting.

The day arrives and the hugs are tight, never tentative or shy. “You look exactly the same!” someone exclaims, even though time has etched hard lines around eyes and softened some edges. But then the laughter starts, and it’s like no time has passed at all.

Stories pour out over glasses of wine and an excellently curated menu.

Remember that all-nighter where we all got hammered? That road trip to the thousand islands where we ate kinilaw peppered with white sand? Those heartbreaks that felt world-ending, soothed by late-night drinks in our dorm rooms?

These memories, once tucked away in the busyness of adult life, resurface with startling clarity. Some shed quiet tears shrouded by laughter as we evoked so much nostalgia.

Conversations inevitably turn to the present as we talk of the joys of new opportunities and the challenges of parenthood. The quiet victories over personal struggles.

Vulnerabilities we shared in college resurface, but now with the wisdom of years.

“I never told you this,” one of us said but that’s why these moments are special. We reinforce the enduring power of our bonds forged in college. It was more than those courses or classes. It was about forging ties between friends who turned into family.

Friends who knew us before we had titles and responsibilities, before we had it all figured out (or claim to). They remind us of who we were—and, more importantly, who we still are at our core.

PROMISES

As the evening winds down, promises are made: “We can’t let another year go by like this.” Group photos are snapped, toasts raised to friendships that withstand distance and time.

When it was time to go, I had to look back. I hate goodbyes but that warmth lingered in my chest.

In a country that often feels fragmented, these reunions are a gift—a reminder that true connections don’t fade. They simply lie in wait like embers, for that spark of togetherness to bring them roaring back to life.

Can’t wait to say hello again…

New Year’s Eve in the Philippines does not stay politely in the background. It makes itself known, early and loudly.

By late afternoon, the streets are already awake. Christmas lights are still up, blinking from windows and balconies because nobody is in a rush to take them down. In some houses, they will still be there by the time February rolls around. The smell of food drifts past gates and down the road. Oil snaps in frying pans. Pots bubble steadily on stovetops that have been working since morning. Someone is slicing apples and oranges into careful circles, lining them up on a tray that will not be touched until midnight.

Outside, the neighborhood starts warming up. Music spills out from open doors and half-open windows. Karaoke machines get tested, adjusted, tested again. Firecrackers pop in short, scattered bursts, set off by people who clearly could not wait any longer. Conversations overlap across sidewalks. Greetings are yelled from one gate to another. Children run past holding plastic horns and noisemakers, already out of breath and louder than necessary.

Inside the house, the table fills fast. Pansit is set down with care, noodles kept long and intact. Sticky rice desserts sit wrapped in banana leaves, waiting their turn. Coins are counted, redistributed, then slipped into pockets. Polka-dotted shirts and dresses come out, worn with a straight face by people who will joke about it later but would never skip it.

Midnight is Loud on Purpose

As midnight creeps closer, the noise does not arrive all at once. It gathers.

Five-star firecrackers start popping somewhere down the street, spaced out and impatient. A piccolo goes off too early and makes everyone flinch. Someone laughs. Someone yells for the kids to move farther back. Car horns join in, held down for far too long, like the drivers have been waiting all year for permission. Whistles shriek. Those plastic trumpets sold outside sari-sari stores get blown until they sound more like dying animals than instruments.

In one house, pots and pans are already out. Someone is hitting a kawali with a ladle that has seen better days. Another person is shaking a reused ice cream container filled with coins so violently it sounds like it might crack. Nobody questions it. Everybody understands the assignment.

Not every family uses firecrackers, but nobody stays quiet. Bluetooth speakers are pushed to their limits. Karaoke machines hum before they sing, plugged in early like they are part of the electrical grid. Someone queues up “My Way,” and someone else immediately shouts for them not to. The song still plays, cut short halfway through, restarted, then replaced with something else entirely.

Children sprint across driveways holding sparklers, supervised from a distance by adults standing in doorways with folded arms and soft warnings that go mostly ignored. Someone’s tita keeps clapping off-beat. A kuya who has had one drink too many is already shouting Happy New Year to people who are not ready yet.

By the time midnight actually hits, the neighborhood is vibrating. Fireworks bloom overhead. Smoke hangs low. Voices pile on top of one another. Laughter spills out into the street. Someone cheers too early. Someone else misses the countdown entirely because they were refilling plates.

The noise does not stop at midnight. It stretches past it, stubborn and triumphant. Quiet was never invited.

Tables That Bend Mean a Year That Will Not Break

In Filipino households, the table does not stay neat for long.

By the time evening settles in, every flat surface is already working. Dining tables get extended. Side tables are pulled closer. Extra chairs appear from storage. Someone lays down newspapers where plates will inevitably overflow. The goal is simple and understood without explanation. There should be more food than anyone could reasonably finish.

Pancit is always there, arranged carefully so the noodles stay long and uncut. A tray of lumpia sits nearby, already missing a few pieces because nobody could wait. A pot of menudo or afritada is kept warm on the stove, lid lifted often just to check. Sticky rice desserts like biko and suman wait their turn, wrapped tightly and placed where they will not be forgotten. Bowls of fruit take up whatever space is left. Oranges, apples, and grapes are lined up deliberately, every piece round enough to pass inspection.

Some families keep twelve grapes aside, eaten one at a time at midnight, each bite paired with a quiet wish. Others skip the ritual but still make sure the fruit is there, just in case. Cakes share space with savory dishes. Ice cream is wedged into the freezer wherever it fits. Nothing is spaced out neatly. Everything is close, crowded, and ready.

Leftovers are part of the plan. Running out of food would be embarrassing. Overcooking is expected. Someone always packs containers before the night is over. Another person insists you take more even when your hands are already full.

Nobody asks if you are hungry. A plate is placed in front of you. Rice is scooped without waiting for permission.

Midnight is a Community Affair

When the clock hits twelve, doors do not stay closed for long.

Gates creak open. Screens slide aside. People step out onto driveways and sidewalks in whatever they happen to be wearing at the moment, house slippers included. Greetings are shouted across the street. Someone yells Happy New Year to a neighbor whose name they have never actually learned. Hands wave over fences. Hugs happen quickly, sometimes awkwardly, sometimes tight enough to linger.

Families greet relatives they see all the time and relatives who only appear during holidays. Laughter cuts through the noise. Short prayers are spoken out loud, then forgotten in the chaos. Someone suddenly gets emotional and blames it on the smoke. Another person pretends not to notice.

Children stay up long past their usual bedtime, wide-eyed and unstoppable. They run between adults holding sparklers down to their last glow. Parents keep calling after them, half-warning, half-smiling. Teenagers hover nearby, pretending they are too cool for this while still filming everything on their phones.

Someone starts recording the moment, phone held high, even though everyone knows it will come out shaky and too loud to understand later. The point is not the video. The point is being there when it happens.

This celebration spills beyond the house. It always has.

The Morning After Moves Slowly

January first in the Philippines does not begin early.

People wake up late, stepping around decorations that were never taken down. The house smells faintly like smoke and food from the night before. Leftovers make their way back onto plates without ceremony. Pansit gets reheated. Rice is scooped straight from the pot. Someone insists dessert still counts as breakfast.

Visits begin sometime after noon. Relatives drop by unannounced and are welcomed anyway. Plates are refilled without asking. Stories from the night before get retold with extra details added in. Someone laughs about who fell asleep first. Someone else insists they were not that drunk.

Decorations stay up longer than planned. Lights keep blinking. Balloons lose air slowly. Nobody is in a hurry to reset the house just yet.

Plans for the year exist, but they are spoken casually, if at all. The day is more about settling in than starting over. The year has arrived. Everyone is still catching up to it.

A Year Should Be Announced

New Year in the Philippines comes with noise, food, and company by default.

It arrives through firecrackers echoing down the street, tables crowded with dishes, and neighbors calling out greetings through open gates. It shows up in leftover containers stacked by the sink and plates pushed toward guests who insist they are already full.

When the celebrations finally slow down, one thing is clear. The year did not arrive quietly, and nobody faced it alone.

There’s a chill in the air. A chill not even the typhoon season brings. It calls for the season of sweaters and hot chocolate, and the smell of something deliciously sweet clings to the air at all times.

Already, you hear bells chiming in the distance. Fireworks fill random spots in the night sky as multicolor lights start to sparkle out of the corner of your eye at every intersection. And as if the streets aren’t filled with enough people, you notice even more of them.

In the neighborhood, at the mall, and even in the comfort of your own home, where you hear voices from the living room of relatives you only hear through video calls. Moments later, the sound of laughter and karaoke bounce through the walls of your house and mixes in with the loudness of the next-door neighbors.

And for all the noise, the lights, and the jokes about Christmas starting far too early, it eventually gathers around a single moment Filipinos wait for every year. Close to midnight, a long table fills up, food set out for everyone to share.

And for most families, it starts in the morning of the 24th of December.

Kitchen Duty and the Work Behind the Feast

My mother delegates one job per family member during this time. Mine always happens to be finely mincing an ungodly amount of onions and garlic. These are to be used as the backbone of every dish she will whip up from here on out.

The sweet and savory staple that is Filipino spaghetti.

Her kare-kare, infamous for hypnotizing guests into zombies digging into their third plates before midnight.

The sisig that is a staple at any party regardless of who and what we’re celebrating.

Sometimes she stops here and lets the guests bring in their own share of the party. But more often than not, it is in our home where we host these parties.

Noche Buena is the same in our household, regardless of where we are in the world. For the past 12 years, my family and I have spent the season like this in Calgary. But this year, we’re celebrating it here in the Philippines.

This year, I’m absolutely thrilled to be shedding tears (of joy?) for the fifth ball of onion I’ll be dicing.

When Everyone Finally Arrives

Friends and relatives usually start to trickle in at dinnertime. They bring in their own share for the long table. One friend brings their special seafood boil – huge prawns, cut up corn cobs, sausages, and potatoes in this sweet, spicy, and addicting garlic sauce. An uncle brings in laing – because what’s a meal without vegetables? But this one isn’t really the kind you avoid at parties. Taro leaves drenched in creamy coconut milk and chili, with some pork and shrimp bites of surprise? Say less.

The rest of the guests bring in the crunchy lumpia (arguably the most important Christmas dinner guest, if you ask me), the fruit salad – a concoction of fruit cocktail with jelly submerged in cream and condensed milk, the soda, the rice, the booze…

This is the pre-game, where we warm up by stretching out bellies with the first plate of food.

Our family members gather from all walks of life.

A nanny for one of my more well-off relatives’ kids goes straight to the karaoke machine, minding her own business while gracing us with Whitney Houston.

A group of uncles form around a table outside the front door with cold bottles of beer and stories I could barely understand. (When I was little, I was told not to listen in on grown-up conversations. Now that I’m a grown-up, I’ve unintentionally kept the habit and still stay out of them).

My mother, my aunts, and a few family friends are scattered in the kitchen and living room, forming their own conversation bubbles that fill the air with jolly noise.

The children have started playing tag in the street in front of the house, where there is no shortage of adult supervisors keeping a watchful eye, while also holding their unfinished paper plates of food.

Every year I see mostly the same family members for this dinner party. Every year, I witness everyone grow just a little bit older, including me. And every year, new family members are born and introduced, while others can no longer join us.

We all meet annually for Noche Buena and celebrate each other’s presence over our family’s own version of recipes for the season. Food is undeniably the one thing we all share other than our blood lineage.

Before the Clock Strikes Twelve

When it’s almost midnight, most of us almost forget. Until my dad calls on everyone to gather around the long table. He does this strategically – about fifteen minutes before the clock strikes. We’ve all done this one too many Christmas seasons before. It takes a while to collect the children running around the streets, the uncles around beer to stand upright, and for the nanny to notice the room getting a little too quiet before she reserves her next song on the karaoke machine.

Once we’re all gathered, the prayers begin. My family is mostly Catholic. The rest of us who are not (me being atheist) don’t really mind the prayers. What matters is we all collectively bow our heads in agreement as one uncle who doesn’t drink alcohol leads the prayer. He enumerates everything we’re all thankful for — the family we’ve all gathered for this night for our health and happiness…

…and for the food that gathered us all here for this one joyous night.

Once we unanimously announce “Amen”, the night continues loudly. More plates are passed around; games are hosted by the richer aunts who don’t know what to do with their money. The nanny finally shares the karaoke machine with others and grabs a plate for herself. And in the middle of the happy chaos, mother finally brings out her secret weapon – buko pandan. A dessert that makes my knees weak. I would fight my only son for the last bowl of that dessert. (Just kidding… or am I? 👀)

When the Night Finally Winds Down

Noche Buena has this weird way of making Christmas day feel too quiet in comparison. Because after midnight – after that burst of loudness from the clatter of cutlery, laughter, song, and chaos – comes the inevitable end of the night.

Some relatives start by saying hushed goodbyes and thank yous to my parents, as it’s almost always embarrassing to be the first one to leave such a happy evening.

The nanny gulps down her soda and reluctantly says goodbye to the karaoke machine. She knows her voice will take a day off the next day.

Mother brings out another weapon in her arsenal – take-out containers. With all the food that has already been consumed, there’s still too much on the table for us to keep to ourselves. And so, the rest of our guests grab a couple of food items to go – the last bit of Noche Buena to keep the party going, even after the night is long gone.

A few cousins don’t go until after they help out with cleaning up, and I’m more than grateful for this, because the house at this state looks like my son spawned ten other versions of himself and wrecked the place.

When the house is mostly clean, and the long table is folded, we all change into our pajamas and pambahay, and finally decide to call it a night. Noche Buena was a huge success – as it usually is every year. We brush our teeth and climb into bed, resting into Christmas day.

… Except, there’s a little rustle in the kitchen, as my husband digs the fridge for another plate of pancit.

By Christmas day, everything feels quieter. The loudest part of the season has already happened the night before, around a long table where food is meant to be shared and time is allowed to stretch. Noche Buena isn’t polished or perfectly planned.

It spills into containers meant for the next day and lingers in kitchens long after midnight. This is how many families in the Philippines welcome Christmas. And if you ever find yourself invited to one, you don’t need to bring anything except an appetite. There will already be more than enough.

Maligayang Pasko, everybody! Wherever you’re celebrating from, may your table always be full.

The Christmas season in the Philippines truly is, for me, to die for, literally and figuratively.

Figuratively? It’s magic! From the moment the ‘ber’ months roll in (hello, September!), the city comes alive. Streets glow with shimmering parol (Filipino star lanterns), malls feature towering Christmas trees, and the sound of children carolling echoes in the air. The energy is electric; it’s lively, warm, and distinctly Filipino.

And literally? Well, that’s where the fun turns into a feat of endurance. The chaos is a real, undeniable force: gridlock that turns a 15-minute drive into two hours, last-minute gift panic, endless queues, intermittent internet, and the reality of the holiday spending pressure. You might just as well end Christmas and die (in a funny, dramatically exhausted way).

I know you’ve read countless “how-to-survive” guides for Filipino Christmas. But this one is different. This one comes with the inspiration and motivation to keep going, to thrive, and to live your Christmas season to the fullest. Consider this your roadmap to holiday bliss, Metro Manila-style.

The Art of the Early Bird

Remember this Filipino holiday mantra: The earlier, the better, but also the cheaper.

The ‘ber’ months, especially the Christmas season, are the most important holiday period for nearly every Filipino household, and this rings true across the business, hospitality, and travel worlds. If you are planning any travel or large gatherings, waiting is not an option.

The world of hotel or Airbnb bookings gets ridiculously harder and more expensive the closer it is to Christmas. As a Filipino, I’ve learned, experienced, and seen this firsthand growing up with friends and family that people book their accommodations as early as 3 to 6 months before the date! This mindset, naturally, applies to flight tickets, too.

If you know you need a place to stay or a flight out of the city, you must secure it before the calendar hits October. This same rule applies to booking event venues or restaurants for Christmas parties or family reunions. If you want to thrive, book early! Unless you are prepared to wait long hours outside or deal with frustrating overbookings and minimal availability, you need to call that favourite restaurant in September to reserve your Noche Buena dinner spot in December.

Traffic Hacks (The Cash-Only Edition)

Traffic. Where should I start? If you don’t own a car, you’re probably looking at ride-hailing apps like Grab or hopping in a taxi. But you know how expensive that can get, sometimes more than the gift you’re delivering or exchanging! The thrive strategy here is two-fold: embrace the two-wheeled life, and always carry cash.

Make sure you have the trending motorcycle taxi apps, like Angkas or JoyRide. They are the true heroes of gridlock, weaving through traffic faster than any car. However, a major secret to actually getting a successful booking this season is payment. During Christmas, internet issues and computer glitches are common, and many drivers from Angkas to Grab prefer immediate cash payment. Why? Because it’s an easy salary to get, especially during this peak season.

I once heard a rumour when I was trying to get to the airport: it took me almost an hour to get a Grab confirmed because, it turns out, some drivers decline customers who set their payment to credit card or app wallet credits, preferring cold, hard cash.

This may sound unfair, but people working during this busy season are getting smarter. In Tagalog, it’s called “diskarte lang yan,” a street-smart strategy to ensure they get paid quickly and efficiently. More importantly, having cash also helps and motivates people to work more efficiently and happily. For Filipinos, these simple pleasures like earning enough to provide a generous Noche Buena handa (feast) hit a soft spot.

Take note: always have enough or extra cash on you. Your cash payment is your ticket to a faster ride confirmation and a happier driver. Plus, carrying cash is also essential for those charming cultural moments: whether it’s children carolling outside your house or neighbourhood kids sweetly asking for “pamasko po” (Christmas gift/money), having some small bills ready is a simple way to participate in the joyous tradition of Filipino giving.

As for public transport, the MRT and LRT are a quick fix, but you’ll still battle huge crowds. The hack? Travel during the absolute off-peak hours (think mid-morning, early afternoon or late evening) and always have your Beep card loaded to skip the ticket machine queue. Finally, don’t just follow Waze; consult its spirit guides. Check the different routes it suggests, compare the time against the distance, and be brave enough to try the little-known backstreets (”shortcut lang, sir”). Just be ready for the occasional dead-end!

The Thrill of Mall Crowd Survival

Shopping malls are the epicentre of Filipino Christmas. They are beautiful, brightly lit, and utterly, impossibly packed. The parking lines, the lines for the escalator, the lines for the cashier, it’s an obstacle course.

The Thrive strategy here is simple: Shop Smart, Not Hard. The moment the mall opens (usually 10 AM), be there. The first hour is your golden hour; you can browse, sample, and pay with minimal elbow-bumping. When it comes to gifts, skip the mall altogether and go digital to avoid the last-minute panic.

Use local online shopping platforms, but be sure to order at least two weeks before Christmas Eve to account for courier delays. For hyper-local needs, you can always try a pasabuy (errand service) on Grab or Lalamove.

And for food? Don’t try to eat lunch at 12:30 PM. Everyone else is doing it. You need the Food Court Jedi Trick: eat an early lunch (11:00 AM) or a very late one (3:00 PM). Better yet, choose a hole-in-the-wall karinderya or restaurant outside the mall for a less stressful, and often more delicious, experience.

Finding the Thrive in the Chaos

Ultimately, the goal isn’t just to survive Filipino Christmas; it’s to enjoy the unique, unparalleled experience.

You must first embrace the waiting. Accept that you will wait, instead of letting the long queue at the check-out aisle or the hours in traffic raise your blood pressure. Use that time wisely. Listen to a podcast, catch up on your favourite true crime or comedy shows, or call a loved one to make those holiday greetings to family abroad. Best of all, practice mindfulness: just breathe and watch the gorgeous Christmas lights go by. You’re stuck, but the holiday spirit still surrounds you!

Amidst the parties, shopping, and errands, be sure to schedule a “Quiet Day.” Block off one full day in your calendar for absolute solitude. No errands, no shopping, no visitors. Just your puto bumbong cravings with yourself or with family and friends and a classic Filipino Christmas movie. This recharges your energy to face the next round of festivities.

Finally, give yourself a Budget Reality Check. The pressure of spending money is intense, so give yourself a budget and stick to it, not just for gifts, but for parties and food. Remember: the best gifts are time and thoughtfulness. A handmade card and a simple home-cooked meal can mean more than an expensive gadget.

The True Filipino Christmas Spirit

Metro Manila during the Christmas season is a dizzying, beautiful mess. It will test your patience, your wallet, and your wits. But every traffic jam is eventually followed by the glow of a million Christmas lights, and every long line leads you closer to a warm family gathering.

By adopting these diskarte strategies by planning early, paying smart, and staying kind, you won’t just grit your teeth and get through it. You’ll move to the city’s rhythm, find joy in the smallest acts of generosity, and experience the Filipino Christmas spirit at its most vibrant, full-hearted way possible.

The parol is arguably the most well known symbol when it comes to Christmas in the Philippines. This lantern is probably the single most prominent symbol that makes a Filipino Christmas unique amongst the various Christmas traditions worldwide.

It’s the most visible sign that the Christmas season has arrived as they begin to show up in public spaces in the famous “Ber” months, and these colorful lanterns are used as decoration for the houses, the plazas, the commercial areas, and the streets all around the archipelago.

Go to any Filipino household during the Christmas season and you are bound to see a parol or a few hanging outside the house, and for the devout, it represents the Star of Bethlehem.

Components

A more traditional version of the parol is made of bamboo and papel de japon, and is illuminated with candles, oil lamps, and carbide lamps. More modern versions use capiz shells and plastic and are lit up with electric lighting to give off brighter colors. The city of San Fernando in Pampanga makes a special version known as “parul sampernandu”, large disc-shaped electric versions of the lantern.

Various switches and LED bulbs are used to light up the current version of parols. Capiz shells are cut to precision to make and are tinted like stained glass to create the colored pieces that create the final product.

Origins

The parol’s most recognized shape is the five-pointed star. This iconic shape only took place around the turn of the century, with the parol undergoing other forms in earlier days. While the origins of the parol are murky, the tradition of the parol can be traced back to at least the 19th century during the late Spanish period. Lantern traditions however, date to pre-colonial times in Southeast Asia, as there are words for lantern in local languages, such as “paritaan” in Tagalog.

Early parols were much simpler during the Spanish era, typically made with rectangular and oblong shapes. They were illuminated by candles or coconut oil lamps. The shapes of the parols began to diversify around the 1830s, including intricate designs made by papercutting.

It was also around this time that these more ornate lanterns were used in Pampanga, in a procession known as Lubenas, In this unique tradition, the lanterns used in Novena processions. Some of the shapes that lubenas take on include a cross, the “asan” or fish, and the star-shape.

Local tradition recounts how a local artisan named Francisco Estanislao from Pampanga created the iconic five-pointed star shape for the parol in 1908, made of papel de japon, bamboo strips, and illuminated with candles. In later iterations, incandescent bulbs were used to light the lanterns. Parols began to incorporate rotor systems which became the template for commercial electric parols from the 1960s onward.

Their Role in Christmas

The parol has historically and is still associated with Simbang Gabi, as parol have traditionally been used to light the way to masses held at the churches. The parol can also be used in novena processions, as it’s a traditional part of the Panunuluyan pageant.

The lanterns followed the dramatization of the journey of Joseph and Mary to seek shelter. The parol lanterns are kept for the Christmas season and are kept until Epiphany, the day that commemorates the Three Kings visit.

Communities and towns around the country hold contests on who can create the best parol, and there are even some local festivals that celebrate parol artistry. The Giant Lantern Festival in Pampanga is one of the most famous parol festivals in the country.

This festival has made the city of San Fernando earn the nickname as the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines” for the distinct giant parols on display during the festivities. The event runs for the second half of December and ends around the New Year. The event is also a competition on the best parol design, and a winner is selected every year.

The parol’s significance extends to the extensive diaspora community. Where Filipinos go and live, they bring the parol with them. The cultural significance of the parol has even extended to the Vienna Christmas Market, where the parol lanterns on the “Philippine Tree” are an attraction. San Francisco even has a Parol Festival in December.

People love saying we have the longest Christmas season—and honestly, it’s true. The moment the ber months arrive, a soft hum of holiday spirit begins, growing louder as December 25th draws near.

We might not have snow, but the breeze turns cooler, the nights stretch longer, and Jose Mari Chan’s classic Christmas songs start playing everywhere. Before you know it, TV networks are counting down 100 days to Christmas, bibingka and puto bumbong stalls start appearing on street corners, and colorful decorations take over homes, streets, stores, and cities alike.

The world celebrates in countless different ways, but there’s only one true heart of Christmas: the celebration of the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. In the Philippines, where the majority of people are Christian or Catholic, this story becomes the thread that connects all our customs, traditions, and festivities. It’s what makes our long, joyful Christmas season feel meaningful and something we always look forward to every year.

The Nativity Scene

The birth of Jesus has been preserved in art for centuries through a diorama of the Nativity scene, commonly known in the Philippines as the “Belen.” The name comes from the Spanish word for Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus.

As depicted in the Bible specifically in the pages of Luke and Matthew, the Nativity scene is described with the Holy Family at the center. Mary and Joseph gathered around the Infant Jesus in a manger, shepherds watching over with their flock, and the Three Magi (also called as the Three Kings) bringing their gifts.

In some exhibits, an angel is also placed, sometimes carrying the banner with the lyrics “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” and the Star of Bethlehem shining brightly above all the figures.

While the tradition of the Belen began in Italy, the Filipinos deeply embraced it after it was introduced by Spanish Franciscans during the colonial period. The missionaries used the Nativity scene as a tangible way to spread the religious message. And to this day, the message still remains the same: Jesus was born in humility, in a lowly manger, out of pure love to save us. That is the heart of why the world—especially the Philippines—celebrates Christmas.

Devotion on Display

Being one of the symbols of Christmas, the Belen has naturally taken on the distinct Filipino touch, just like anything we’ve adapted in our culture. One such practice that I grew up with witnessing every year is the quiet anticipation of waiting for the Infant Jesus. In our church, the manger stays empty until the Christmas Eve Mass when the image of the Infant Jesus is finally placed in the manger of the Nativity scene to symbolize His birth.

Another tradition happens after mass when the image of the Infant Jesus is taken out of the Belen and carried among parishioners. Everyone, young and old, would line up with the crowd to kiss the feet of the figure as an act of veneration and adoration. In some parishes, the image of the Virgin Mary, together with the Infant, is also brought down from the altar for the faithful to honor on Christmas Eve.

Some communities now have added a new element to this practice. A Gospel book is placed in the manger before the Baby Jesus is enthroned, and during the singing of “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” or “Papuri sa Diyos,” the image of the Holy Infant is placed in the Belen, imitating the angels’ announcement to the shepherds.

Lastly, there are parishes that bring the image of the Infant to the homes within their jurisdiction. Carried by altar servers and accompanied by priests, the visit gives families a chance to venerate and adore the Holy Infant in the comfort of their own homes—a heartfelt reminder of Christ’s presence in every household.

The Filipino’s Artistry and Variations

Like many traditions Filipinos have adapted through the years, the Belen is no exception to our creative and artistic touch. Across generations and regions, we’ve developed our own practices—some deeply religious, while others beautifully cultural—all helping the Nativity scene reach every corner of the country and keep the heart of Christmas beating year after year.

Filipino hands can transform the Belen into almost anything. It can be styled, dressed, and arranged in countless creative ways and different sizes as a reflection of our faith, creativity, and local identity. Of course, there is the classic version of churches we all know and love: the Holy Family inside a humble stable, surrounded by shepherds, angels, and the Three Kings which usually are made from resin or porcelain. But in many communities, the Belen is handmade from wood, clay, coconut shells, capiz, or recycled materials by local artisans or even regular people.

Some Filipino traditions take things a step further and literally bring the Nativity scene to life. In an article, Valenzuela City’s Panunuluyan features real people (and sometimes even live animals!) playing the journey of Mary and Joseph before Christmas for big audiences. The play culminates on Christmas Eve when the image of the Infant Jesus is offered to the priest during mass before being placed in the Belen.

Pampanga also shines with its own tradition inspired by Spain’s Las Jornaditas. In Sta. Rita and Guagua, parishes would stage 10 different tableaux narrating the Nativity story, each based on the 10 Gospel readings of the modern Misas de Aguinaldo or “Simbang Gabi” locally known as “Simbang Bengi” in Kapampangan.

Fun Fact: Tarlac is dubbed as the Belen Capital of the Philippines thanks to their annual competition, Belenismo sa Tarlac. Locals celebrate the event by crafting elaborate life-sized Belens made from local and recycled materials to be displayed throughout the province.

Towns, cities, and organizations are all welcome to participate, turning Tarlac into a great holiday tourist attraction. What began as a celebration of devotion and creativity has grown into a major holiday attraction, drawing visitors and boosting the local economy during the Christmas season.

A Symbol that Outlives Trends

The Belen in the Philippines today is the perfect mix of tradition and innovation. Even with all the holiday, with its fast-paced energy and endless preparations, the Belen stands as a gentle reminder to pause, reflect, and find comfort.

Families now personalize their own Belen using minimalist pieces, eco-friendly or recycled materials while parishes go all out with life-sized elaborate displays. But with the rise of technology, this tradition is naturally reshaped. Some parishes and organizations use lights, motion sensors, LED backdrops, and other modern touches to bring the story of the Nativity to life more than ever (this time figuratively).

Social media plays its part too, with Facebook and Instagram serving as platforms to share photos, videos, and unique Belen designs, inspiring others and turning Nativity scenes into a shared story that reaches more people each year.

Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year. I love the spirit of giving and sharing, the way my family comes together to celebrate, and the joy of cooking for Noche Buena. I love how the soft hum of the ber months slowly builds into a full holiday rhythm filling the air with Christmas songs.

I love the twinkling lights and festive decorations, but whenever I see a display of the Holy Family, I fall silent in gratitude. In that quiet moment, I’m reminded of the true reason for the season—and I fall in love with it all over again.

The sisig is known today as one of the most popular dishes in Filipino cuisine, and is seen as pulutan in bars to family-style restaurants as a main course. When foreigners want to try Filipino food, sisig is often mentioned as a must-try and is a popular choice for foreign visitors who want to be introduced to the cuisine.

This dish mainly consists of chopped pig’s head, mayonnaise, a fried egg, onions, calamansi, and chili all served on a grill platter, and is served sizzling hot. Its origins paint an illustrious past, one with varying origin stories and one of utilizing the unwanted parts of the pig. The dish also showcases the rich culinary traditions of the Kapampangans, who are known as the heart of Filipino cuisine.

Its Unlikely Pre-Colonial Past and Possible Origins Outside of Kapampangan Traditions

Not many know of sisig’s origins besides Aling Lucing’s store, but sisig has been believed to have ties to the pre-colonial past of the Kapampangan people. During this period the dish took on a completely different form that modern-day consumers would not recognize.

Recent research has suggested that sisig is not entirely Kapampangan in origin and that the dish may have various origins around the archipelago. The first recorded instance of sisig comes from a 1732 dictionary by Augustinian friar Diego Bergano where sisig is defined as a “green papaya salad or green guava with pepper, salt, and vinegar.”

There are other instances of similar dishes served in other regions of the country. The term “sisig” appears in a 1754 Tagalog-Spanish dictionary which describes a brine that is put in vinegar. Sisig has undergone various forms in its history.

Aling Lucing

The current version of sisig was popularized by Lucia Cunanan, also known as “Aling Lucing” at her carinderia in Angeles City, Pampanga in the 1970s. She developed the trademark sisig in 1974 when she served a dish of grilled and chopped pig ears and cheeks seasoned with vinegar, calamansi juice, chopped onions, and chicken liver served in hot plates.

Her version became popularized with the help of the Philippine Department of Tourism. According to popular oral tradition, she created a hawker stand that made these ingredients and served them as pulutan for the locals and US servicemen stationed at Clark Air Base. The air base had a readily accessible excess of meats that they readily gave away.

The use of pig heads was due to it being a cheap or free cut of meat as it was not used when preparing meals on base. Today it is regarded as an important part of Angeles City’s cultural and gastronomic heritage, as noted in Ordinance No. 405 in 2017 declaring “sisig babi” as tangible heritage of the city.

Possible Precursors to Aling Lucing

Similar versions of the chopped-up pork rendition of sisig is believed to have existed before Aling Lucing’s famous dish. Dom Martin recounts how “sisig matwa” or “sisig matanda” in Tagalog was a household meal in his San Fernando house in the 1950s.

This dish consisted of cut boiled pig maskara, minced onion, cucumbers, and soaked in vinegar. It was alternatively called “Quilo Babi” and was considered to be an ordinary meal.

An earlier version of sisig matwa from the Rivera family in the 1930s is served at Basisang Carinderia, which includes palm vinegar, black pepper, soy sauce, and salt.

Other Similar Dishes and Newer Versions of Sisig

Sisig is hardly the only chopped and grilled meat dish in the country. Dinakdakan from the Ilocos region uses chopped pig’s head that is boiled, chopped, grilled, and then mixed in a sweet and tangy sauce. Like sisig, it’s a popular pulutan dish. The pig’s brain is included in this version. Another Ilocano dish called kilawin uses similar ingredients, where the meat is cooked in vinegar.

Since rising in popularity, sisig has taken on other forms. Pork and chicken liver may be used as a replacement for chopped pig’s head. Local chefs have also experimented with using chicken, squid, tuna, and tofu. Sisig has also been used as a filling in fusion dishes like sisig tacos and in sandwiches and salads, particularly in food carts among the diaspora communities.

Conclusion

While Kapampangans proudly claim sisig as originally a part of their culinary fabric, it is important to note that sisig takes on various forms and has local adaptations outside of Pampanga. While it is an important aspect of Kapampangan culinary tradition, it is also an important dish in the fabric of Filipino culinary traditions, and is part of a greater shared heritage.

Today, sisig stands as a vibrant symbol of Filipino creativity and represents a living dish with deep roots, numerous variations, and a lasting place on the Filipino table. Whether enjoyed as pulutan with friends or as a main dish in restaurants across the country and beyond, sisig continues to be a unifying factor in Filipino culture.

Its remarkable evolution is a reminder that Filipino food, like the people who create it, is dynamic, resilient, and richly layered. A heritage meant to be celebrated, shared, and savored.

When I landed in Manila after twelve years in Calgary, I felt like I was stepping into a fever dream. The kind where everything is too bright, too loud, and too familiar to be real. The air hit me like a hot towel fresh from the sauna, and before I could catch my breath, the humidity decided to make itself at home on my skin.

It was disorienting, speaking the language yet feeling like a tourist. I could understand every word, but forming sentences in Tagalog took effort, like wearing an old sweater I used to love that now felt tight around the edges. I remember standing outside NAIA, staring at the chaos of jeepneys, taxis, and tricycles all honking in one spontaneous orchestra, thinking, “so this is home?”

But I knew this was what I came home for. This land is the mother that raised me, and I was determined to get to know her again. It’s been four short months since I came home with the family I built in Calgary. Here are a few things I’ve rediscovered since yelling “Touchdown, Manila!”

The Rainforest and the Frozen City

Calgary was polite in every way. The weather, the people, even the wind had boundaries. Spring rains were brief and shy, like they didn’t want to inconvenience anyone. I used to wish for more of it — the soft patter, the smell of wet grass, the drama of thunderclouds.

Now I live inside that wish. Manila is part rainforest, part Armageddon. In just four months, I’ve experienced more rain than I did in my twelve years in Canada. The sky opens up like a faucet you forgot to turn off, and it doesn’t stop until you start checking for mold in your shoes.

And yet, I can’t hate it. It’s a little inconvenient when you hang your clothes dry in the sun (when there is barely any sun for weeks). But I also learned that they made special fabric conditioner for seasons like that here (Not sponsored by Downy™️, but… hit me up?)

Peace, I learned, doesn’t always mean silence. In Calgary, silence was the default — even the birds seemed too shy to chirp. When one finally did outside my apartment, I’d gather my husband, our son, even the cats, like everyone, come see proof that life still exists!

Rain drumming on tin roofs, tricycles buzzing past, vendors yelling “Taho!” or “Balut!” The wind doesn’t just blow here; it talks. It grabs you by the face and says, you’re alive, remember?

Here in Manila, the soundtrack never stops. Roosters wake us up at 5 in the morning. Crickets overpower the evening news to let us know there’s no rain tonight. The rain speaks to us so often, we have names ready for the incoming storms for the whole year.

In Canada, you have to seek out nature, and be in awe of how grand and big and beautiful it is. Here in the Philippines, you’re invited to be a part of it.

The Soundscape of Chaos

My husband was overwhelmed at first. He missed the kind of quiet in Canada that let you hear your own heartbeat. We never quite got rid of our habit to visit malls - a very Filipino way to pass time. So we would visit the local ones, and find other Filipinos trying to fill their boots. But it’s never truly the same. In Calgary, the malls are predictable - one section for food. Another strip just for shoes. And another only for clothes, then the gadgets and the spas…

Here, even malls breathe. It’s like stepping into a festival every day, with music blasting from three directions and children sprinting across the hallways. There’s food stops in every hallway, there are salespersons getting you to try the latest perfume. Indoor playgrounds with varying themes - from dinosaurs to underwater!

Arcades for kids and kids-at-heart. And at the heart of most malls, there will always be some sort of event taking place. Out of the ten times I’ve gone to the same mall in two months, I’ve seen competitions for online games such as Valorant take place, Marvel appreciation events, One Piece merch sales - they even sold BYD Electric cars INSIDE THE MALL!

Now, my then-overwhelmed husband is now the one coordinating our schedule so we could go visit the mall when they decide to blow up a giant inflatable Pikachu for a Pokemon event so he could meet his idols (and introduce them to our son).

The Rhythm of Time

Life runs slower here, and somehow I finally caught up.

In Calgary, I had a dishwasher and a washer-dryer combo, yet I was never able to find and balance my time to use them properly. The days always seemed so short, and perhaps the shorter days in the latter part of the year really do have an impact on my productivity. You can meal prep all you want but you’ll somehow never have the time to sit down and relax, unless you’re compromising your time to do your household chores.

Here in Manila, I handwash dishes and hang my clothes to dry, praying the rain doesn’t betray me halfway through. It’s time-consuming work, sure, but oddly meditative. There’s something soothing about watching the day unfold between laundry lines and the smell of soap.

The strange thing is, I have time now. Not because there’s less to do, but because life simply refuses to sprint. Maybe it’s the humidity. Maybe it’s the unspoken rule that you’re not supposed to rush what’s meant to be lived slowly.

Faith and Whiplash

This one deserves a full paragraph and maybe a therapy session.

Before leaving Manila, I was Catholic — the kind that prayed before meals and thanked God for traffic not being “too bad.” Faith was stitched so deeply into my days that it was easy to miss, like background music you stop noticing after a while.

Then Calgary happened. Somewhere between snowstorms, mental illness and self-awareness, I stopped believing. But it was never out of spite. I still have deep respect for the faith that brought me up, and even more respect for anyone who practices any faith.

But now, I drive past billboards that say “Talk to Me. – God” and I feel like I’m being short-circuited to remember what it was like to make the sign of the cross. The Philippines doesn’t ease you into religion; it dunks you straight in.

Sometimes I wonder if the country is trying to re-convert me through sheer persistence. But maybe that’s just what rediscovery looks like: not returning to who you were, but just remembering your past self, and seeing how far you’ve come.

People and Warmth

One thing Canadians and Filipinos share is friendliness, but it comes from different worlds of warmth. Canadians are open and polite, kind in that calm and practiced way that makes everyday interactions easy. They’ll hold the door, compliment your shoes, and say you should grab coffee soon. But most of the time, that coffee never happens. Friendships stay on the surface. It’s pleasant, but shallow.

In the Philippines, friendliness has a different rhythm. People can seem distant at first, even snobbish if you catch them on a bad day. But once you’re in a shared space, that wall dissolves. At my son’s preschool, for instance, parents actually stay inside the classroom.

At first, I thought it was strange to linger when he should be learning independence, but soon I realized it’s normal here. Parents sit, chat, and help their kids together. When a child acts up, other parents step in and gently correct them, as if every kid in the room belongs to all of us.

It surprised me how naturally I fell into the same habit. There’s a quiet comfort in it, a sense that we’re all watching over one another. That’s the kind of togetherness you rarely see in Canada, where people value independence above community. Filipinos, I think, are wired for connection. We move as one when it matters.

Maybe it’s because we’ve all faced similar hardships, and we’re used to carrying the weight together. Struggle makes people softer in unexpected ways. It cuts through formality and forces honesty. It teaches you how to notice when someone else is hurting. And perhaps that’s why it’s easier to rely on Filipinos. Our instincts lean toward care, toward helping. It’s not perfect, but it’s real. It’s the kind of warmth that doesn’t fade after small talk ends.

Food and Family Restraint

Let’s talk about food, because honestly, how could we not?

Calgary spoiled me. That city was a buffet of cultures wrapped in snow — authentic Indian food on one block, Korean barbecue on the next, and an all-you-can-eat sushi place waiting to destroy your self-control. (Explain to me how sushi is cheaper in landlocked Calgary than in Manila, where we’re literally surrounded by ocean. Make it make sense.)

So I ate. A lot. Calgary was cold, and I was bored. Food became both comfort and culture. My hobbies were all sedentary — reading, writing, gaming, sleeping, occasionally pretending my maladaptive daydreaming counted as cardio. Eating was the one active thing I did. Between the North American portions, endless snacks, and Costco samples that felt like a part-time job, I ballooned.

Then I came home to the Philippines, where food feels different. Salt over rice can be a whole mood — a meal, even a memory. Everything’s organic. The street food is dangerously good, and every pop-up stall is proudly Filipino-inspired, which basically means “we add calamansi to everything.”

And yet, I eat less now. I’m not sure how I found the restraint.
Maybe it’s the heat.
Maybe it’s the constant sweating.
Maybe I just haven’t found my go-to restaurant yet.
Or maybe — and this one hit me mid-bite — it’s because the Philippines taught me a different kind of restraint.

Back in Calgary, meals were mine: my portions, my plate, my fridge.

Here, everything’s shared. When you eat at a Filipino table, you don’t just eat — you participate. You pass the ulam. You make sure the little ones eat before you reach for seconds. You take enough to be satisfied, but not so much that anyone else might miss out.

It’s a kind of mindfulness that isn’t about dieting or discipline, but community. I used to think eating less meant missing out. Now I realize it means belonging. Meals here remind me that abundance isn’t measured in servings, but in togetherness.

Coming Home to Myself

The Philippines didn’t welcome me back with open arms. It greeted me with rain, sweat, confusion, and a strange sense of déjà vu. But somewhere between the thunder and the traffic, the handwashing and the laughter, I started to remember who I was before I learned how to say “hala?”

Rediscovering the country isn’t really about the country at all. It’s about rediscovering yourself — the messy, multilingual, spiritually confused self who can find peace in noise and joy in simplicity.

And maybe that’s what coming home really means. Realizing that no matter where you go, you will always look for home.

The past few weeks and months have been especially hard for the Philippines. One storm after another, paired with powerful earthquakes and widespread flooding, has left countless families displaced, homes destroyed, and communities struggling to start over.

In late September, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck northern Cebu, killing at least 69 people, cutting off power and water supplies, and damaging thousands of homes and schools.

Soon after, a 7.4-magnitude quake and a 6.8 twin tremor hit Davao Oriental, triggering landslides, structural collapses, and mass evacuations.

As people in the south were still reeling, back-to-back typhoons—Kalmaegi (Tino) and Fung-Wong (Uwan)—battered large parts of the country, displacing over a million residents, inundating farmlands, and leaving entire towns underwater.

Together, these disasters have magnified long-standing vulnerabilities in infrastructure and deepened humanitarian needs across multiple regions. They’ve also reminded us of something enduring: the Filipino spirit of resilience and unity that always shines through the darkest of days.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything happening in the world right now. The same TV show can become something totally different when it travels across cultures.

Business vs. Dream

For Filipinos, having a talent is a ticket to a better life, but what happens when a show about dreams comes from a country that sees it as a business?

As a Filipino and a writer living in the Netherlands, I’ve had a front-row seat to the Dutch perspective. I’ve collaborated on this article with Thomas Plaatsman (Cultural Reads), bringing his Dutch perspective into a deeper exploration of business versus aspiration.

When I was 15, I went to an audition for Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) with my sister. It was a huge event, so big that we camped out overnight just to get a spot. The energy was electric because for us, getting on the show was a chance to make our dreams come true.

For a nation where many people go abroad to help their families, these shows are a way to succeed right at home. And no, I didn’t make the cut!

While we saw it as a path to a better life, PBB is, at its core, a reality show, and it has all the drama you’d expect. The housemates fight, fall in love, and get caught up in scandals, making it feel just like a real-life soap opera.

My collaboration with fellow writer and The Hague resident Thomas here has helped us explore this fascinating cultural difference. When I first told Thomas the story of camping out for a TV audition, he stared at me blankly.

For him, the original Dutch Big Brother was a simple television product, a business of manufactured drama. For me, it was a spiritual quest for a better future. This profound, immediate contrast became the entire focus of our work, realising that the same show title held two radically different meanings across 10,000 kilometers.

In the Netherlands, the original Big Brother was completely different. There, it was a TV product, a business designed to create drama. The show was known for scandals and putting normal people in crazy situations.

Unlike in the Philippines, where the shows are about talent and hope, the Dutch version was seen as a bold experiment, not a vehicle for dreams.

The clever creators of shows like Big Brother (1999) and The Voice (2010), Joop van den Ende and John de Mol, saw entertainment as a global product.

The Netherlands is a small country, so it had to look beyond its borders to succeed.

Their secret was a simple playbook. They would first test a show in the Netherlands, then design it for universality by using simple themes, such as competition. Finally, they would sell the idea, not the show. They essentially created a TV show “recipe” that could be changed to fit any culture, which is precisely why it worked so well here.

From The Voice to the World

For Filipinos, music is so much more than a business. It’s a huge part of our culture. Karaoke is at every party, and singing is a passion that can lead to a better future.

When The Voice of the Philippines came out, it was an instant hit. It gave talented singers a chance to share their gifts with the world. While the adult version of the show has been on hold, it continues to thrive with The Voice Kids and The Voice Teens, with a new season of The Voice Kids PH currently in its latest season since September 2025.

Filipino Talent on the Global Stage

Filipino talent has also found its way onto the global stage. Sofronio Vasquez III, a singer who didn’t get a single chair turn on the Filipino version of the show. He didn’t give up. He later auditioned for The Voice USA and ended up winning!

Sofronio’s win wasn’t just his… it was a vindication for every talented Filipino who felt overlooked. It proves our core belief: that Filipino talent transcends borders and formats. Even the Dutch ‘recipe’ can’t contain the force of our heart. It just gives it a new venue.

We are only redirected, never denied, and sometimes, redirection leads to the biggest stage of all. Your dream might not happen the way you first imagined, but if you keep working hard and stay true to yourself, it will find its own way.

We also discovered that Filipinos and half-Filipinos living in the Netherlands have auditioned for The Voice and The Voice Kids here, bringing that same passion to the Dutch stage.

In 2014, Katrina Manaog, a young Filipina raised in the Netherlands, impressed the judges and advanced all the way to the finals of The Voice Kids Holland. And Isabella Lepping, who is half-Filipino and half-German, turned two chairs on The Voice of Holland, showing her pride in her roots.

Even the original Dutch version of the show is making a comeback, with The Voice of Holland returning in January 2026, followed by The Voice Kids Holland later in the year, after a four-year break.

As of 2025, The Voice has seen over 150 adaptations, and Big Brother has produced more than 500 seasons around the world. These reality formats, first imagined in the Netherlands, have been reshaped by dozens of cultures over the last 20 years, but perhaps nowhere have they meant more than they do in the Philippines, where they’re not just shows, but stepping stones toward a dream.

When Culture Gives Business a Soul

In the end, the story of global TV isn’t just about who owns the format or where it began but about how audiences breathe meaning into it.

What started as Dutch ingenuity evolved into something deeply human in the Philippines: a mirror of our collective dreams, struggles, and hopes. Every song sung, every audition line, every moment of triumph on stage reflects the Filipino spirit that turns entertainment into inspiration.

This shows that while a TV show might start as a business idea, a culture’s passion can give it new life and an entirely new meaning. And that’s what makes our version of these global shows not just successful, but soulful.

They say Filipinos can make anything work.

And nothing proves that more than our beloved tricycle. A motorcycle bolted to a welded sidecar and somehow blessed by divine balance? Yeah, it shouldn’t work. But it does. And it’s been getting us places – literally and metaphorically – for generations.

These modern-day metal beasts are the descendants of Japan’s WWII military tricycles, a relic of war repurposed into something far more peaceful: the daily commute. After the war, abandoned motorcycles and sidecars found new life in Filipino hands.

Mechanics, tinkerers, and dreamers saw potential where others saw scrap metal. With a few bolts, some bending of steel, and a whole lot of bahala na, the tricycle was born.

We took something once meant for battle and turned it into a symbol of survival and hustle. Because that’s what Filipinos do. We rebuild, repurpose, and ride on. We take what’s left behind and turn it into something that moves us forward.

The tricycle isn’t glamorous, but it is dependable. It’s the hero that shows up when the Grab driver cancels or when the rain floods everything but your will to survive.

Before Uber (or Grab, for the local crowd), there was always the trike.

Too long of a walk but too short for your Rav4? Take a trike.

Going to school just a few blocks away? Trike.

Missed the last jeepney? Trike.

Heartbroken and just need to feel the wind hit your face dramatically while pretending you’re in an indie film? You guessed it. Trike.

When we say, “we ride at dawn,” we mean it. To get to work. To pay the bills. To chase dreams and deadlines.

A Vehicle Built for Our Roads (and Our Chaos)

It’s not just the convenience; it’s the design genius. The tricycle’s slim build makes it perfect for the narrow alleyways and unpredictable terrain of the Philippines. It can weave through puddles, potholes, and pasaways (you know who you are) with ease.

Reader, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve avoided being grounded back in high school thanks to the convenience of a tricycle (and the cooperation of the local drivers in the area who knew I was up to no good. Bless y’all. May you always have warm pandesal in the morning 😇)

It’s basically the Swiss Army knife of local transport. While buses and jeeps get stuck in traffic, trikes snake through backroads, finding a way when there shouldn’t be one. Because that’s the Filipino way: if there’s no way, we will make a way.

From Freelance Hustle to Formal Recognition

Before 1985, tricycle drivers were freelancers in the purest form. No contracts, no government backing, just pure hustle and heart. They built their own sidecars, managed their own routes, and negotiated every fare by instinct and experience. There was no “association,” no fixed boundary, no protection from the whims of local traffic enforcers. Just survival.

But in October 1985, everything changed. The government finally recognized tricycles as a vital part of public transportation, placing them under the supervision of local governments. This meant drivers could now register officially, operate legally, and be acknowledged for what they had always been: essential workers long before that term became a hashtag.

It was less about bureaucracy and more about validation. For decades, these men (and a few fearless women!) had been ferrying students, workers, and entire families through rain and rush hour, quietly (... okay maybe not that quiet) keeping the country moving. The law simply caught up to what the streets already knew: we’ve been relying on them all along.

It’s wild when you think about it: these drivers had been serving our streets, barangays, and flood-prone corners long before anyone gave them a certificate. They were MVPs from the get-go.

You’ll often see them waiting in line at dawn, sipping coffee from a plastic cup, ready to take strangers where they need to go. Some of them have been doing this for decades. Some have raised entire families on their daily rides.

Not all heroes wear capes, indeed. And in the Philippines, many of them are found riding metal chariots zipping through the cities’ veins.

Tricycles as Moving Art (and Life Stories)

Each tricycle tells a story. Painted in vibrant colors, often with bold statements like “God Knows Hudas Not Pay,” or even dedications to loved ones (“For My Beloved Maria 🥺❤️”), they’re basically the street version of your Notes app affirmations.

Every bolt, decal, and decorative sticker screams: we may not have much, but we’ll make it ours.

Ask around and you’ll find someone who says, “My father’s tricycle put me through college.” That’s not just a line. That’s the story of thousands of Filipino families. Those engines don’t just carry passengers; they carry dreams.

A Symbol of the Filipino Spirit

Every tricycle ride is a small adventure: unpredictable, noisy, occasionally questionable, but always moving forward. It represents our adaptability, our humor, and our drive to keep going no matter how bumpy the road (and oh, the roads will be bumpy).

So, the next time you hop on a trike, remember: you’re not just catching a ride. You’re participating in a small act of national identity. You’re riding a piece of history. One that started from the ashes of war, evolved through the decades, and still shows up every day to take us home. (And work. Ugh)

And if that’s not the most Filipino thing ever, I don’t know what is.

You know you’re in the Philippines when every neighborhood, no matter how big or small, has one: a tiny shop tucked into the corner of someone’s house, with hanging sachets of coffee, shampoo, and snacks dancing in the wind.

The sari-sari store – literally meaning “variety” in Tagalog – is our local version of the corner store. It’s the beating heart of every barangay, that uniquely Filipino mix of business, community, and chaos that somehow keeps everything running.

The last time I walked into one was before I left for Calgary in 2013. Back then, the sari-sari store was my personal Amazon and Shopee rolled into one.

Need eggs? They’ve got it.

Out of milk? No problem.

Craving canned luncheon meat because your fridge is emptier than your soul after finals week?

They’ve got that too. It’s your one-stop shop when you only need to stop for one or two things, and not a whole grocery haul.

And if you grew up in the Philippines, you probably have a sari-sari story too. I still remember being about eight or nine, sent on “important” errands by my parents to buy a pack of cigarettes. In hindsight, I can’t tell if that says more about our old outdated policies or our extreme trust issues — the kind where we trust too much that kids won’t smoke what they’re buying.

I don’t know if you can still do that today. I hope not. But that was part of the charm: everyone knew everyone, and trust was the default setting.

(Does this mean I’m gonna set my son off to buy a pack of cigarettes for cultural training? Perhaps not. I don’t even smoke. But my intrusive thoughts are telling me to do it just for kicks… Don’t worry I won’t.)

A Little Bit of History

The sari-sari store isn’t new. Historians trace its origins to early Chinese traders who settled in the Philippines during the Sung Dynasty as far back as the 12th century.

They sold daily essentials in small quantities to local villagers, a habit that blended perfectly with Filipino culture. By the American colonial period, sari-sari stores were already everywhere, serving as micro-economies for families trying to make a living from their front yards.

The concept fits the Filipino way of life perfectly. We’re a nation of tingi-tingi, or “buying in small portions.” Why buy a whole bottle of shampoo when you can get one sachet for today? Why purchase a week’s worth of coffee when you can grab one packet at a time?

Perhaps it’s thriftiness. But I think it’s also for adaptability. It’s making things work, even when life doesn’t give you a full pack.
